Don’t get it twisted; Donwill is still very much a part of Tanya Morgan, but since last year’s release of his album Don Cusack In High Fidelity, the Cincinnati-born, Brooklyn-based rapper has been taking out time to carve out his solo niche. One of the standout tracks from Don Cusack was “Love Junkie,” the ode to one-night stands, which featured Peter Hadar and Harlems Cash. After hearing the remix, which features Wallpaper and San Francisco’s premier rhythm section, The Park, founding member of the renowned DJ crew The Rub DJ Eleven recruited Donwill to officially release a full Love Junkie EP on his own 11 Inch Records.

“I’ve been a Tanya Morgan fan for a minute, so when I heard the remix Donwill did with Wallpaper, I was sold” says DJ Eleven. In addition to the Wallpaper remix of “Love Junkie,” the EP also includes “Look At Me,” an all new b-side produced by 1-O.A.K of The Honor Roll, and a So Shifty remix of “Love Junkie.”

The “Love Junkie (So Shifty Remix)” is easily the most adventurous remix on the EP, with the Hamburg, Germany-based DJ and production duo providing a House-infused thumping, syncopated drum beat, along with a mix of fluttering and stabbing synth lines to accompany the chopped and often pitched and effects-laden vocals placed throughout the track. Though Tanya Morgan members Von Pea and are currently taking the time to focus on their respective solo projects, this doesn’t stop their frequent collaborations. On this occasion, they are brought together by Focus… for the latest in his series of tracks paying homage to hip-hop greats. This song, specifically, is a tribute to Ali Shaheed, the much-revered A Tribe Called Quest producer and also features a verse from Chaundon of Hall of Justus, who is fresh off the release of his latest album, No Excuses, as well as his performance with the HOJ crew at the Audible Treats 2010 CMJ Showcase.

As for the origins of the track, it makes total sense that it features members of Tanya Morgan, as the group has worked with Ali Shaheed in the past. Becoming a part of the homage was simple and surprisingly quick, as Donwill explains. “Focus… does these homages, like, monthly and Von had put me on to ’em. After the RZA one dropped, I went to Twitter and said, ‘Somebody tell Focus… I want in.’ Within 2 re-Tweets he was following me and we had moved to Gmail.” Von Pea, Donwill, and Chaundon do a commendable job pulling off the A Tribe Called Quest vibe, and their contributions have led to another solid installment in Focus…’s series.

With Von Pea‘s debut solo record, Pea’s Gotta Have It, dropping today and the Audible Treats CMJ Showcase with legendary fellow New Yorker Black Sheep on Thursday, it’s easy to see that Von’s living the “Good Life,” which is also his appropriately named newest single.

With a soulful beat reminiscent of J. Dilla, this chorus-less banger rides upon a catchy vintage sample that croons “Don’t give up the good life.” The Tanya Morgan emcee showcases his skillful delivery and lets his personality shine through on the whole track. Some of the lyrics come directly from the writings of the rapper’s high school journal and include sentiments that have taken on a different tone as time has passed. “The track is based on the idea that I’d be ‘the man’ by 22 and get the girls I wanted at the time (I decided to keep the real names of the girls from back then),” says Von. “These aspirations seem so silly looking back at them and knowing how serious I was.” Even if Von Pea’s priorities have changed, it’s safe to say that this same seriousness has carried over, only to musicianship.
