“We’re originators over here; they’re followers!” exclaims Tajai at the beginning of the video for Pep Love’s Can’t Nobody Do It Like Us,” the latest single from his forthcoming album Rigmarole, which will be released March 6th. For Pep, one of the founding members of the legendary Hieroglyphics, being an originator is as much of a statement about his past as his present, as he and the rest of his Hiero crew continue to be trailblazers and trendsetters for independent hip-hop artists.

“Can’t Nobody Do It Like Us” shows that Pep hasn’t lost a step behind the mic, either, and he sounds especially reinvigorated here, as he flips innovative schemes and, multi-syllable rhymes atop Billion Coast’s blipped, hazy-bass production. The song features a bridge from Opio, and the video, produced by Spencer Groshong and shot by Austin Steele, offers viewers something of a day-in-the-life of Pep as he prepares for a show, fitting considering Hiero’s unrelenting tour schedule each year. The camera follows Pep as he makes his way through the venue, behind the scenes kicking it with fans, before finally taking the stage to perform with Hiero in front of a packed crowd.

Hieroglyphics crew member and one-fourth of Souls Of Mischief, A-Plus is excited to announce the release of his new EP, Pepper Spray, now available for free download courtesy of Compound 7. The EP serves as the first of four in Compound 7’s rock-inspired Tribute Series EP’s, and accompanying each EP will be a special, limited edition t-shirt designed by Counter Balance, available here.

A-Plus and Compound 7 plan to release four installments for their rock-inspired Tribute Series EP’s, collaborating with different artists for each project after this initial EP. Included in the series is an EP with Del The Funky Homosapien, which samples music by Rage Against The Machine, one with Opio, that flips music from the White Stripes, and finally the Nirvana inspired production with Eligh. “We started out real grass roots when creating Pepper Spray,” explains A-Plus. “Pepper Spray was the first EP completed, and it was coming along so well that it inspired me to do more with other favorite bands of mine.”

The first EP will take on the music of the Red Hot Chili Peppers aptly named Pepper Spray. Rather than recreate a single album from the group, A-Plus’ EP will pull from their entire discography, sampling various songs from the legendary group’s deep catalog, including classics such as “Give It Away,” “Californication,” “By The Way,” and “Hey Oh” “Basically,” says AAGEE on his choosing of songs to flip, “we decided what songs were our favorites, and from there it was all about figuring out how well each of those songs translated with our production style and what we were trying to accomplish on Pepper Spray.”

Bay-Area super group Hieroglyphics are back in a big way, releasing a new song “Reputation” in conjunction with a series of paintings inspired by the group from When Art Imitates Life (W.A.I.L.) – Hiero served as the guiding creative force behind the Hieroglyphics Legacy and Monument Series
paintings. From music to art to clothing collaborations, and more, the legendary Hiero crew has certainly earned quite a “Reputation,” and the aptly named song celebrates the Hiero legacy. This no-frills track is all about the flow; synthy guitar riffs and bare bones beats leave the listener free to focus on the killer verses – these seasoned veterans need no embellishment. “Sorry that we kept you waiting… sort of like a test of patience/had to come up with the best arrangement,” A-Plus tells fans, who definitely won’t hold the group’s absence against them with a new track out and their upcoming West Coast tour to look forward to.
