BBU – “The Hood” Ft. GLC

BBU, the four-man Chicago-based group of rappers Jasson Perez, Epic, Illekt, and DJ Esquire, is excited to release their new single, “The Hood.” The track, featuring GLC and produced by Classick, is taken from BBU’s forthcoming bell hooks mixtape, presented by Mad Decent and mixed by DJ Benzi, which will be released February 14th via Mishka Records.

While “The Hood,” doesn’t embody the same Juke-inspired sound of previous singles, the track continues the group’s knack for blending the unexpected, bringing together the Windy City’s old and new guard. “GLC is the homie, and a legend in Chicago hip-hop,” says Epic. “We feel blessed to be on a track with him,” adds Jasson, noting that GLC’s unique brand of “ism” is a perfect fit for the song. “But really, it’s about community, about building a movement.”

“The song is about how people can be judged for speaking slang, and how it can make others look at them as being uneducated,” explains Illekt. “But slang is such a great thing, because it’s who we are and it represents our generation.” The song’s chorus tackles the topic head on, with lines like, “Why you talk like that? Because I’m from the hood/ And that’s all I heard, and all I understood,” while the first verse drives the point home from the opening bar: “They look down on me, cause the way I talk/ My vocabulary probably outline them in chalk.”

Pep Love – “Can’t Nobody Do It Like Us” Ft. Opio

“We’re originators over here; they’re followers!” exclaims Tajai at the beginning of the video for Pep Love’s “Can’t Nobody Do It Like Us,” the latest single from his forthcoming album Rigmarole, which will be released March 6th. For Pep, one of the founding members of the legendary Hieroglyphics, being an originator is as much of a statement about his past as his present, as he and the rest of his Hiero crew continue to be trailblazers and trendsetters for independent hip-hop artists.

“Can’t Nobody Do It Like Us” shows that Pep hasn’t lost a step behind the mic, either, and he sounds especially reinvigorated here, as he flips innovative schemes and, multi-syllable rhymes atop Billion Coast’s blipped, hazy-bass production. The song features a bridge from Opio, and the video, produced by Spencer Groshong and shot by Austin Steele, offers viewers something of a day-in-the-life of Pep as he prepares for a show, fitting considering Hiero’s unrelenting tour schedule each year. The camera follows Pep as he makes his way through the venue, behind the scenes kicking it with fans, before finally taking the stage to perform with Hiero in front of a packed crowd.

Constant Deviants – “Walk Of Fame”

Following the recent release of their mixtape, Platinum, and as they continue to prepare for their anticipated new album, Diamond, the Constant Deviants duo of rapper M.I. and producer DJ Cutt continue to leak exclusive, all-original non-album tracks to hold fans over. Premiering today is “Walk of Fame,” a track which stays true to the Deviants’ sample-driven and boom-bap-embracing sound.

Reinforcing their New York roots – the duo splits their time between Brooklyn and Baltimore, Maryland – “Walk of Fame” contains a Frank Sinatra sample while the drums are sampled from the classic “Impeach The President” break, by the Honey Drippers. Raw, dusty and full of soul, “Walk of Fame” is more of a race to better days than anything. As M.I. says of the message, “We’re just kind of relaying some of the urban plight and expressing a plan to escape!”

hasHBrown – “This Is It” Ft. Dannie Walker

With only one week until the November 30th release of hasHBrown’s new album, Break Something, the Houston-based rapper/producer stays busy, giving fans yet another single from the project. In the past weeks, hasH has released the video for “Heaven,” not to mention his collaboration with Detroit’s Guilty Simpson on the song “Break The Chain,” and now, hasH is excited to unveil his latest single, “This Is It,” which also features singer Dannie Walker on the chorus.

“The main inspiration was going out on the town and knowing that at this ‘one spot’ you were going to hear good music, no matter what,” explains hasHBrown. “Some venues and events are known for their nightlife party atmosphere but what draws me in to going out to a bar or lounge is if I know that I’m going to hear dope music while I party.” And in telling his story, hasH keeps things creative with a feel good track, one that maybe extends a little beyond his core audience, but also one that allows the up-and-coming do-it-all to avoid having his music put into a box.

hasHBrown – “The Death Penalty”

Multitalented MC/producer hasHBrown is happy to announce the release of his brand new single, “The Death Penalty.” This is the first single from his solo sophomore album, Break Something, which will be released as a free download on November 30th.

Coming straight out of Houston, TX, hasHBrown began his rhyming career alongside John Dew and Hip-Phonix with the hip-hop trio, The Council, until 2008 when he started releasing solo mixtapes. Fast forward three years, and now hasHBrown is ready to release Break Something, the follow-up to his cathartic EP, Relationsh*t, featuring guests like Guilty Simpson, Dustin Prestige and Dannie Walker. “It’s a departure from my core sound,” HB says of the new project. “This project is more influenced by rock and funk. So it’s going to sound a lot different, more aggressive.”

In keeping with this newfound sound, hasHBrown’s first single off of Break Something is “The Death Penalty,” a cautionary tale for anybody looking to question his skills or test his authority. “Any person in a leadership role will be challenged by new comers that may want the spot they obtain,” explains HB. “In essence, the ‘penalty’ of leadership could get you killed, and in this song I’m defending my mantle as one of the best newcomers out of Houston, TX.”

Although hasHBrown produced many of the songs on Break Something under his other moniker, Jett I. Masstyr, he chose a beat by another Houston producer, YPhoenix, after hearing it at a beat battle. “I’m a sucker for crazy samples and fierce drums,” says HB. “We built our relationship from just talking about his production after the battle. Then, he sent it over, and natural inspiration took over.” Lyrics like “This the calm before the storm/ above average to the norm/ I’m a savage Jason Bourne/ Contract killer but I’m calm,” and heavy guitar-driven samples establish the song’s badass attitude and reiterate what hasHBrown is about, which is, according to him, “I’m here, I’m not scared, and I go hard.”
